Absolute Software is currently developing a product for the medical industry that uses a Densitron touch-enabled organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display. We have successfully implemented the software which drives the OLED and allows the user to interact with the application using the touch-screen interface. The OLED will also be used to display video and images.
OLED technology has improved considerably over the past few years. An OLED works in a similar way than an LED, but uses organic layers between the anode and cathode. Since OLED displays do not require backlighting like LCDs, they consume less power. This property makes them an attractive choice for small, battery operated devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and other low-power products running embedded software that require a colour screen.
Besides being more energy efficient and more responsive than LCDs, OLEDs are thinner and more flexible. They can also be made transparent. There are current projects and ongoing research on OLED technology, which will arguably lead to a range of exciting new commercial applications.
