TCP/IP is a suite of Internet protocols covering four software layers, from the network access layer (Ethernet, RS232, etc) right through to the application layer (FTP, HTTP, etc). TCP/IP actually gets its name from the two most significant protocols in the suite: TCP and IP.
At Absolute Software we are keen to design TCP/IP into embedded projects. It provides an immense amount of flexibility into a product. It also gives users a technology that they are comfortable with. For example, most users are happy to be instructed to open a browser and type 'ABCwidget' into the address bar.
TCP/IP is appropriate for such a wide range of products, from consumer products (where we can provide a sexy Flash interface) through to industrial products (where the cabling practicality is a strong selling point).
